We recently encountered a unique issue on the rebuild of an HP Pavilion A1630N computer. While performing a bare metal install of the Windows XP operating system using HP’s built in recovery procedures (F10), we would receive the error "cannot create file c:\hp\bin\setres.log".
We were clueless as to the cause of this issue, even after considerable deliberation and extensive online searches. The following was our logic:
- The hard drive tested to be in good order.
- We must assume that HP performed the appropriate due diligence to assure that the restore process works properly under normal conditions.
- The Motherboard and related hardware tested to also be in good working order.
The solution tuned out to be quite simple. The system was hooked up to a KVM switch and when we hooked the monitor directly into the computer, the issue was resolved!
Unfortunately this error caused us some considerable headache because the initial failure of the install continually prevented the system from restarting properly, generating the error: “System not fully installed. Please run setup again.” For help with this error, refer to the following

The data is probably not lost, only hidden.
